Spider veins are small, twisted blood vessels located near the surface of the skin. This makes them more visible than normal veins. Spider veins appear blue, purple, or red.
The main function of veins is to carry blood back to the heart through a one-way valve. Once this valve weakens or becomes damaged, it becomes difficult for the blood to flow in the correct direction, leading to blood pooling inside the vein. This is how veins become spider veins.
This is often an early sign of blood circulation problems and can occur as result of the aging process. Spider veins are not dangerous, but they are cosmetically unappealing and can lead to embarrassment.
Luckily, spider veins can be treated with an IPL photofacial treatment, improving your skin’s appearance. IPL photofacials can also help reduce the appearance of small varicose veins.
IPL, or intense pulsed light, is more commonly known for treating hyperpigmentation. However, this treatment is just as effective for removing spider veins.
The numerous wavelengths of pulsed light heat up the blood in the targeted spider vein. Eventually, this heat damages the walls of the blood vessel. The body will reabsorb the damaged blood vessel, allowing the skin to return to its former unblemished appearance.
The IPL session is very quick, typically taking 15 to 45 minutes, and requires no downtime/recovery time. You are free to resume your daily activities after the treatment.
Expect a feeling of sunburn, and avoid direct and prolonged sun exposure three to four weeks after your session. Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from damage.
It should take a week to see initial results from an IPL photofacial treatment and four to six weeks to see the final results. You may need multiple treatment sessions to achieve your appearance goals; most patients require two to four sessions.
